Character For “The Space Man” Flash Game
It’s that time of year again where I am quite busy. One project I want to share with everyone is my Flash ActionScript game that I am doing as a final project for one of my classes this semester. The game itself is called “The Space Man.” It’s a take on the class Space Invaders game we all (or many of us at least) know. In my game, you play as a space man sent on a mission to explore the depths of space. As you fly through, you encounter space junk and it is in your best interest to avoid it – otherwise your player ends up dying. However, the purpose of this short article isn’t so much of exploring my game (which is playable here), but more of sharing some artwork I created in Maya.

As part of an effort to update my portfolio website and add features and functions that make it more convenient to share my work to a broader audience, I added Facebook’s XFBML plugin to my website, a Share and Like button, and added open graph and meta tags to my website to allow for video embedding onto Facebook. In this posting, my goal is to cover the steps as to how I did this to help out anyone who is intimidated by the Facebook developer’s guide or simply educate anyone who’s interested in this topic.
Before we begin, I just want to warn you that this reading is aimed towards people who have a basic understanding of HTML. I don’t expect you be a professional coder, but just to understand the various tags out there (or heck, to know what a tag is) and how basic coding functions. I will do my best to explain everything in detail, but there may be a few instances where I assume you know what I am referring to or I simply forget to explain myself.
So, if you’re not intimidated yet, just keep reading.
UPDATE (Feb. 28, 2011): Updated SWF video player for a more dynamic functionality.

So for the past few days, I’ve been working on various things on my site ranging from small code tweaks, design changes, added features, and updated content. Most of the code changes have been minor and were done so for organizational reasons. For example, my former Share features on the site were placed within it’s own PHP script and re-implemented to the rest of my website using the include(); code. From the user perspective, this is a change you will never notice, but from my end – the developer – it helped me out a lot in making design changes and adding/modifying the current share features. In addition, I added some code in improve how my site shares on Facebook (more on this in a future post).

On February 20th, 2011, I participated in the first Dapper Days at Disneyland, where people came in dressed in “sophisticated fashion” (feel free to define this as you wish). Though the dress shoes I wore really strained my feet by the end of the day, it was loads of fun to find others participating in Dapper Days around the park. Plus, the photo ops around the park while being well dressed just added to the fun. Here are a few of the pictures we took during the first Dapper Days.

Before and After of an image shot in RAW and fixed on the computer.
I love shooting pictures in RAW. What is RAW you ask? Well, its a image format where there is no compression or loss, resulting in the highest quality image you can get out of a camera with so much more flexibility when it comes to correcting the image in post. For many of us, we’re probably taking pictures through our camera phones or more consumer friendly point-and-shoot cameras. Many of these don’t shoot in RAW so often, you’re getting the compressed version we all know as JPEG. Though the resulting image may look the same, in the inside, they are not. Makes sense? If not, here are some comparisons to give you a better idea.
